I began using word documents in 4th grade. I know my way around Microsoft Word very well and feel very confident when using it. I use it daily for notes, papers, and other assignments. I use word much more in college at FSU than I did in K-12, simply because I have more assignments. I prefer word to google docs or any other word processing software because I find it easier to use and navigate.
After reading through the ISTE Standards for Educators, the standard that stuck out the most to me was "learner." I believe this standard is crucial in helping students become better learners. Learning from and with others promotes collaboration with peers. It allows people to build on the experience of others and use that to their advantage. Additionally, it broadens one's horizons and opens them up to new ideas.
I agree with the label "digital native" for today's youth. To me, a digital native refers to someone who grew up when technology was present in most (if not all) aspects of life. Digital natives do not find constant updates and problematic, whereas a digital immigrant would. I have seen many differences in the ways digital natives and digital immigrants handle technology. Whenever I am in class with an older professor, I often notice how they struggle with tasks their students would find simple, such as downloading documents or simply sharing their screen. In the future, I anticipate my students to have a much more expanded knowledge of technology. Future students will have grown up with technology form extremely early ages, whereas most digital natives nowadays weren't introduced to it until middle school or later. To me, this means that future students will understand more about technology and be one step ahead of their teachers.
Hi! I agree, I definitely use Microsoft word way more now at Florida State than I did in middle school. I also like Google Docs better, just for simple documents and assignments. I agree with what you said about how the term "digital native" is accurate. I also wrote in my blog about how the students have to help the teacher in the classroom navigate technology because they are considered digital natives and most of the teachers are not.
